LA MATIÈRE DE MÉMOIRE #7

LA MATIÈRE DE MÉMOIRE #7

2015 / digital / color / 30min.

This is the 7th work in LA MATIÈRE DE MÉMOIRE, a series focusing on people who experienced the Pacific War we have been working on since 2009. In this installment we talk to ITANI Fumiko (89), a survivor of two air raids (the “bombing of Tokyo” and the “bombing raid on Yamanote”) that burned down and transformed Tokyo in 1945, killing over 100,000 people. Feeling a sense of approaching danger after the “bombing of Tokyo”, Itani had moved to Higashi Nakano in the Yamanote area, but on the night of the day she moved there this area was directly attacked in the “bombing raid on Yamanote”. By fleeing quickly she managed to escape with her life, but in one night she lost everything. The story of the seldom spoken of “bombing raid on Yamanote” strongly compels us to listen to the voices of the countless forgotten dead who sleep in the soil of Tokyo.(V.B.)
