THE SLEEPING FLOWER

THE SLEEPING FLOWER

KOGUCHI Utako / 1991 / 16mm / color / 7min.

A grandmother’s daily activities are overlaid with off-screen conversations between grandmother and granddaughter. The unremarkable conversations of a calm daily life. Eventually tissue flower petals rain down and the grandmother is buried in paper flowers. “Grandma, close your eyes” “Close my eyes and die?” – a funeral performance. “Are you scared to die?” “I’m not scared. So much so I even wonder why I’ve lived so long.” She asks her granddaughter, “Am I going to die?” and the two of them laugh together. (From the 1992 IFF catalogue)
