For more than 50 years, I thought that Regular 8 was silent.
I had no idea that there was such a thing as an “optical talkie”.
Moreover, when compared with 16mm the sound is further ahead of the image by a factor of two – 52 frames (2 seconds and 4 frames). I made a work expressing the feeling of distance of 52 frames and the pitch and discrepancy of image and sound. I took raw Regular 8 film and cut it cleanly from the image area to the soundtrack segment with a film slicer.
I also cut the film and listened to the sound from the perforations lined up in two rows. (O.J.)
