ART

2015 / digital / color / 10min.

This work is composed of footage Itoh Nobuaki shot of himself in various parts of Japan. The images are very similar to those we see on video sharing sites and social networks, but in these videos Itoh poses the extremely essentialist question, “What is art?” He offers no “right” answer, however, and instead the blind faith of human beings imprisoned within an essentialist view of art is brought to the surface. It is a work that employs humor in questioning expression, the desire for approval, and the systems that make art what it is.
