THE MILITIA COMPANY OF CAPTAIN FRANS BANNING COCQ

THE MILITIA COMPANY OF CAPTAIN FRANS BANNING COCQ

2015 / 16mm Film / color / 4 min.

It may be that cinema looks up to Rembrandt and his paintings. In Amsterdam’s Rembrandt Square there are life-sized statues of figures from the famous painting entitled THE MILITIA COMPANY OF CAPTAIN FRANS BANNING COCQ but commonly known as THE NIGHT WATCH. Behind them there is also a statue of the artist, Rembrandt van Rijn. In winter even the daytime is a bit dark in Amsterdam, and can in fact be mistaken for night. It may indeed have been this dimness that made the northern painters pay such close attention to light. For an instant the sunlight reflects off a building beside the Royal Palace on Dam Square, and we are once again struck by how differently things can appear.
