8mm film is masked on a frame-by-frame basis, and the blue shadows of bleached film on a misty background feel like organic cells. This causes us to consider to what extent film, an artificial object, is a living thing. The film we touch and hold in our hands is not a molded thing that simply cuts out sections of space, but rather something with a beating pulse like the flow of blood through the body. What I am looking for in film is something that comes from the repetition of this primitive operation and process. (S.H.)
