SEWING MACHINE AND LOCOMOTIVE

SEWING MACHINE AND LOCOMOTIVE

2015 / digital / color / 20min.

The invention of printing technology seems to have come about through the adaptation of presses used for making wine. Eventually, with the invention of the steam locomotive the rotary press was born. Steam locomotives involve a combination of rotational motion and up-and-down motion. Both sewing machines and the Lumiere brother’s cinematograph are also a collaboration between rotational and up-and-down motion. If the locomotive and the sewing machine had never been born, the birth of motion pictures would also never have occurred. Why did Lumiere shoot THE ARRIVAL OF A TRAIN? This work is a journey in search of the answer to this question. (H.S.)
