An octopus or a human ? With the use of extremely rapid cutting and close-up photography, the two subjects overlap and intertwine to the point where we can’t discern them from each other. As if displaying internal organs, the creepy images invite the dark curiosities of a freak show, creating a violent world of the grotesque. (taken from IFF 1996 catalogue)
　

SARUYAMA Norihiro

Born in Tokyo in 1972. Graduated in the 18th class of the Image Forum Institute of the Moving Image. DEPORTATION was a special selection at IFF 1996. It was then officially invited to the 15th Vancouver International Film Festival in 1996 and the 26th Rotterdam International Film Festival in 1997. His storyboard work RENEWAL won the Splatter Award in the MTV STATION ID CONTEST 1998. Released as his first new work in ten years in May of 2007, THE FESTIVAL IN THE CAGE was screened at numerous film festivals. Currently at work on his latest film, 『UOZUTSUMI』. Major works: 『KIKOSHI』 (1992-1993), 『TENRAKU』 (1993- 1994. Revised in 1996), and THE FESTIVAL IN THE CAGE (1996-2006).
